This project was the first major cancer center in the state of Alaska. It was designed to improve patient healthcare by providing a number of benefits both functional and aesthetic. Having a state of the art, all-encompassing cancer center with physicians’ offices, treatment, pharmacy, counseling, and rehabilitation under one roof improves orientation and convenience, helping with the daunting process of cancer treatment.
With views to the East from patient waiting areas, orientation is easily gained for the staff and patients. The warm palette of finishes and textures provide an engaging, soothing environment for the long hours spent in treatment. For the staff, day lighting work areas and efficient proximity to patients and support areas were key in our task to help staff performance. Because patients no longer have to fly out of state for treatment, housing is provided for family members which aids in the treatment and healing process by keeping loved ones close at hand.
