    ORTHOPEDIC PHYSICIANS ALASKA

Orthopedic Physicians Alaska (OPA) is an 80,000 SF facility designed with patient comfort, safety, and care as its central focus. The facility boasts day-lit patient lounges and an open material palette, fostering a welcoming atmosphere that reinforces its dedication to comfort, safety, and care.

The ground level of the facility houses the Alpine Surgery Center, equipped with 5 operating rooms and 1 procedure room. It offers comprehensive on-site surgical support, including emergency power generation and sterile processing. An imaging center, equipped with both Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and X-ray Computerized Tomography (CT) capabilities, is adjacent to the surgical suite on the first level.

One of the most significant challenges of this project was adding a 15,000 SF extension and renovating nearly 45,000 SF of the existing space, all while ensuring the facility remained operational six days a week. Further complexity arose from the need for a 2-hour separation between portions of the 1st and 2nd floors, facilitating the Extended Stay Suite (I-2 occupancy) on the second floor. This necessitated tight coordination with the Administration, User Groups, and the Contractor to devise a phasing plan, ensuring uninterrupted patient and staff access, proper fire egress routes, minimal infrastructure disruption, soundproofing, and infection control.
